Adverbs of manner tell us how someone does something or how something happens. They usually come after the main verb:

  • He drank quickly. [after the verb]
  • He drank the water quickly. [after the object]
  • He drank quickly the water. [NOT between the verb and object]

Most adverbs of manner end in -ly. Exceptions include well, hard, late and fast (see irregular adverbs).

Adverbs of manner form the largest group of adverbs. We make most of them simply by adding -ly to their corresponding adjective. This is an alphabetical list of 130 common single-word adverbs of manner. Adverbs of manner that do not end in -ly are shown in bold.
