1. With "that"
We can use clauses with that:
• after verbs of thinking:
think
believe
expect
decide
hope
know
understand
suppose
guess
imagine
feel
remember
forget
suspect (v-nghi ngờ) or doubt (không tin)
_ I hope that you will enjoy your holiday.
_ She didn’t really think that it would happen.
_ I knew that I had seen her somewhere before.

• after verbs of saying:
say
admit
argue
reply
agree
claim
deny
mention
answer
complain
explain
promise
suggest
_ They admitted that they had made a mistake.
_ She argued that they should invest more in the business.
_ The children complained that they had nothing to do.

Note: tell and some other verbs of saying must always have a direct object (see clauses, sentences and phrases):

_ We tried to tell them that they should stop what they were doing.
_ The police informed everybody that the danger was over.

• as postmodifiers after nouns to do with thinking or saying:
advice
belief

_ I had a funny feeling that something was wrong.

• after some nouns to say more about the noun:
fact
advantage
effect
possibility
chance
danger

_ She pointed out the danger that they might be left behind.
_ There was a chance that we would succeed
    Note: We often use a that clause to define one of these nouns after the verb be :
danger
problem
chance
possibility
fact
_ The danger is that we will be left behind.
_ The fact is that it is getting very late.

• after some adjectives which describe feelings to give a reason for our feelings:
pleased
sorry
happy
unhappy
sad
excited
glad
disappointed
afraid
_ I am sorry that you can’t come.
_ Everybody was pleased that the danger was past.
_ It is lucky that you were able to drive us home.

2. No "that"
NOTE: We can always use a clause without the word that:
_ They admitted [that] they had made a mistake.
_ The police informed everybody [that] the danger was over.
_ I am sorry [that] you can’t come.
_ There was chance [that] we would succeed.

1. Verb + infinitive
Some verbs are followed by an infinitive of the next word is a verb:
to offer
to want
to seem
to decide
to hope
to forget
to mean (=intend, plan)
to expect
to manage
to refuse
to promise

   It was getting late and there were no buses so I offered to take them home in my car.
   We were very busy but we managed to finish before 6 p.m
   He hit one of the boys but he didn't mean to do it, I mean to go but I forgot.
   I asked her to carry the suitcases but she refuse to help.
   I don't expect to see them before next week.
   They promised to phone as soon as they arrive.

2. Verb + infinitive without "to"
They are:
make S.O do S.T
let S.O do S.T
   My parent make me do my homework every night.
   My parent let me go out after I've done my homework.

3. Verb + -ing form or infinitive
Some verbs can be followed by an -ing form or infinitive, but the meaning is very similar:
to begin:                  bắt đầu
to continue:             tiếp tục
to love:                    yêu
to prefer:                 thích hơn
to start:                   bắt đầu
to like
to prefer

But with some verbs there is difference is meaning:
   I remembered to buy a present for my brother. (= I didn't forget)
   I remember buying her a present. (= it's in my memory, it happened and I remember)
try     (+ to V: cố gắng…); (+V-ing: thử…)
like    (+ to V: muốn…); (+V-ing: thích…)
stop  (+ to V: dừng lại để…); (+V-ing: chấm dứt…)
remember (+ to V: nhớ sẽ…); (+V-ing: nhớ là đã…)
forget (+ to V: quên làm…); (+V-ing: quên là đã)
regret  (+ to V: thật tiết khi…); (+V-ing: thật tiết là đã)
propose  (+ to V: đề nghị…); (+V-ing: gợi ý)
mean     (+ to V: muốn nói, ngụ ý); (+V-ing: cần phải)
manage       (+ to V: xoay sở); (+V-ing: quản lý)

1. Use the -ing form of verbs after "enjoy, keep (on), avoid, finish, consider, get throuhg, insist on, mind, suggest". Do not use to + verb after these words.

I enjoy dancing very much.
I enjoy reading. (not I enjoy to read)
I can keep (on) dancing all night.
Paul avoids going to dances whenever he can.
He insists on staying home tonight.
I must finish doing my homework before the dance.
I hope I get through working early tonight.
Will you consider helping me with my work.
George can't help asking questions.
Would you mind closing the door? (not mind to dose)
Chris suggested going to the cinema. (not suggested to go)
Note: After enjoy, mind and suggest, we use -ing (not to ... ).
The negative form is not -ing: When I'm on holiday, I enjoy not having to get up early.

a. Verbs of liking and disliking:

_ I love swimming but I hate jogging.
_ They always enjoyed visiting their friends.
_ A: Do you fancy going for a walk?
_ B: I wouldn’t mind

b. Phrases with mind:
wouldn’t mind (= would like)
don’t mind (= I am willing to)
would you mind (= will you please…?)
_ I wouldn’t mind having some fish and chips.
_ I don’t mind waiting for a few minutes.
_ Would you mind holding this for me?

c. Verbs of saying and thinking:
admit
consider
deny
imagine
remember
suggest
_ Our guide suggested waiting until the storm was over.
_ Everyone denied seeing the accident.

d. Other common verbs are:
avoid

_ I haven’t finished writing this letter.

_ Suddenly everybody stopped talking. There was silence.
_ I'll do the shopping when I've finished cleaning the flat.

_ Have you ever considered going to live in another country?
_ They said they were innocent. They denied doing anything wrong.

e. Passive form of -ing (being done/seen/kept etc.):
Many of these verbs are sometimes followed by the passive form of -ing: being + past participle
_ I don’t like being interrupted.
_ Our dog loves being stroked under the chin.
_ I don't mind being kept waiting. (= I don't mind people keeping me ... )

f. Noun + -ing clause
Some verbs are followed by a noun and an -ing clause:
Verbs to do with the senses:
see
watch
hear
smell
listen to
etc.
_ We saw everybody running away.
_ I could hear someone singing.

Other common verbs:
catch
find
imagine
leave
prevent
stop
_ I caught someone trying to break into my house.
_ We couldn’t prevent them getting away.

g. We also use -ing after:
give up(= stop)
put off(= postpone)
go on or carry on (=continue)
keep or keep on (=do something continuously or repeatedly)
_ I've given up reading newspapers. I think it's a waste of time.
_ Catherine doesn't want to retire. She wants to go on working. (or ... to carry on working.)
_ You keep interrupting when I'm talking! or You keep on interrupting .. .

h. With some verbs you can use the structure verb+ somebody+ -ing:
_ I can't imagine George riding a motorbike.
_ You can't stop me doing what I want.
_ Did you really say that? I don't remember you saying that.
_ 'Sorry to keep you waiting so long.' 'That's all right.'

2. Some verbs which are followed by either the "-ing" form or the "to" with approximately the same meaning.

Ghi chú: Khi đứng sau giới từ (ngoại trừ giới từ “to”), động từ phải thêm “-ing”. Đối với giới từ “to”: có một vài trường hợp ngoại lệ ở mục 3.

Examples:
I stayed in last night but I feel like going out this evening.
At the police station, he admitted stealing the woman's money but denied hitting her.
Cigarettes are very expensive, so he's decided to give up smoking.
I've lived in New Zealand all my life; I can't imagine living anywhere else.
Some people can't stand working at the weekend but I don't mind.  (=it's not a problem)
I always try to avoid driving through the city centre during the rush hour.
